Another Racing Warrior Retires with The Exceller Fund

For immediate release:  October 1, 2012

Another Racing Warrior joins The Exceller Fund (www.excellerfund.org) with the help of the Gulfstream Park Thoroughbred Aftercare Program, Adena Springs, Blackwood Stables (Versailles, KY), and the ASPCA.

The Exceller Fund began the Racing Warrior Campaign in 2011 in order to “provide a future beyond the finish line” for the unsung heroes of the racing industry, those horses that have spent years on the racetrack.  Volunteer Executive Director, Nicole Smith, says, “These horses are the ‘bread and butter of the industry’ and we are honored to be able to offer them a lifetime commitment of care, whether as a permanent retiree or placement into a second career.”

After thrilling fans for a decade, Looney Lionel has been retired from racing at the age of twelve with 114 starts.  He currently is enjoying his days being turned out along with his new friends at Blackwood Stables and will soon be evaluated for a second career.  According to those that know this gelding best, this delightful character loved his job and put his heart into every race.
